Ukraine is introducing yet another drone. The German drone manufacturer Quantum-Systems has started the delivery of 100 Trinity drones of various models on schedule.

The delivery of the drones was announced in September 2023 during a meeting between founding CEO of Quantum-Systems Florian Seibel and Kyiv’s Major Vitali Klitschko at the Stern Stewart Institute Summit.

The company, which is particularly intensively involved in Ukraine’s defence campaign, is actually donating these drones. Quantum-Systems is also supplying hundreds of Vector UAVs to Ukraine on behalf of the German government.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed to me in November last year that they were planning to train Ukrainian soldiers on these mapping UAVs in January 2024.

While researching for another article I plan to publish next week, I was told that the Ukrainian operators had completed the train-the-trainer training at the Trinity in Ukraine and that a first delivery to the city administration of Kyiv will take place this month.

  • Max. Flight Time: 90 min
  • Max. Area Coverage: 700 ha
  • C&C Range: 5 – 7.5 km
  • Wingspan: 2.394 m
  • Max. Take–off Weight: 5.75 kg

It is also particularly interesting to note that this was a “train-the-trainer training”. This means that the Ukrainian operators themselves were specifically enabled to also train on the Trinity. In theory, this means that they will no longer be dependent on external trainers in the future.

How and where the 100 Trinity UAVs of various models are deployed is ultimately up to the city administration of Kyiv. In principle, however, these drones are suited for battle damage assessment.

This means that they are used for the precise mapping of damage to infrastructure, buildings, roads, or bridges after, for example, Russian attacks. You can see what this looks like in the video below.

However, there is also a chance that the Trinity will be seen on the battlefield. As already mentioned, the German company is supplying a mix of all Trinity models to Ukraine.

This also includes the Trinity Tactical. It could be used, for example, to provide special forces operating in enemy territory or isolated areas with real-time imagery since they can’t wait for rear echelon sources.

Thanks to the modular system, the Trinity is airborne within a few minutes and performs automated tactical mapping and terrain visualisation missions. In just one flight, a single drone could cover an area of 700 hectares or a linear corridor of 90 kilometres in length.

No matter where and how the drones are then deployed by the Ukrainians, we can be sure that they will serve well both on the battlefield and in the cities and actively support the fight against the Russian invaders or civilian reconstruction.
